The great thing about owning something antique like golf clubs, is that you can often times feel and see the history behind it. Antiques are a perfect way to teach kids and young adults about history. Some people find joy from collecting antiques and go to great lengths to maintain and display them. Maintaining them is an important aspect of owning them since, in some cases they are fragile and very expensive and antique golf clubs are no exception. This article will give you a brief history on the most sought after antique golf clubs. It will also suggest what to do with them.

Golf clubs have always been designed based on many factors. The terrain, the available technology, rules which stipulate what could and could not be used and recently, the golf ball and physics and computer aided design.

If you are an avid collector of antique golf clubs, you may already know about early irons which were made to tackle the terrain on which games were played. The problem with theses irons were that they easily obliterated the delicate golf balls of the time which were use up to the period 1850. As a result, wooden clubs were mostly utilized to make shots. The “rutting iron” however was used to free balls which wandered in grooves of the cart wheel.

In the 1870’s the advancement of technology meant that blacksmiths were no longer found making iron clubs. Hickory shafts would have the words “hand forged” on them but perhaps the only thing handcrafted was the impression of the manufacturer’s name. This advance in technology meant that the iron clubs were more sophisticated in appearance, lighter with smaller shanks. They were as a result easier to use.

These beautiful antique golf clubs with longstanding histories are often found in deplorable states. Long gone are the glory days in which they were used to play. They instead are sometimes found rusty and so collectors usually find the desire to restore them back to their shiny glory.

The hickory golf shaft is scarce and hence, quite valuable. The ones made before 1900 are most valuable because any golf clubs made in this century aren’t scarce seeing as how golf became popular in this century. So if you find one of those clubs I spoke about earlier made prior to 1850 or up to the late 1800’s, then you’ve found gold.

It is not advisable to attempt to restore any of these antique golf clubs if you do not know what you are doing. Sandblasting, super gluing and replacing parts with modern ones will surely devalue the item. You shouldn’t leave the item in the same rusty neglected state either. I suggest reading on how to properly restore them as you do not want to risk causing damage. The degree of restoration is dependent on the appropriateness.

If you are a dealer, you may not want to put much time and effort in restoration as collectors will not mind doing the work. The antique golf club will appeal to them in any state. If you are a collector then there are lots of books available which will give you the guidelines on how to properly restore antique golf clubs. Collectors will take pride in how they restore, maintain and display their antique golf clubs.
