As a professional golf instructor, I am constantly approached by newbie players (and some seasoned old hands, as well) asking how to go about using a golf handicap calculator. Although it’s true that the process used to determine this often elusive number can seem quite complex, it is surely not. Once you get the “what” and the “how” parts down pat, it’s actually quite simple! To begin our exploration into this somewhat mysterious calculation method, let’s start with the basics. Following is a sampling of some of the most common questions I am constantly asked. Hopefully, this bit of insight will give you a better understanding of this often confusing aspect of the delightful game of golf…
Is “golf handicap” and “handicap index” the same thing?
Whereas a “golf handicap” represents the playing ability of an amateur golfer on a given course, “handicap index” refers to the service mark of the USGA (United States Golf Association) that is used to measure a player’s potential ability on a course of standard difficulty. The latter is expressed as a number taken to one decimal place (10.4) and is used for conversion to a “course” or “golf” handicap. “Golf handicap” is an actual numerical measurement calculated via a complex formula that takes into account a player’s adjusted gross scores and overall course difficulty. It is used to put competition between players of varying skill levels on a more even keel. Players with handicaps of 0 or better are called “scratch” or “par” players.
How is a golf handicap calculated?
The number is calculated through the use of a complex formula that uses a player’s adjusted gross score, along with USGA course and slope ratings. A golf handicap calculator can be extremely useful in this aspect.
What does “course rating” mean?
This refers to the number of strokes that a par (aka scratch) golfer would shoot for on each set of tees on a given course.
What is “slope rating”?
The Slope Rating is a number that indicates the difficulty of a given course for “bogey” (one stroke over par) players.
How are course and slope ratings determined?
The USGA has rating teams that go out to different courses and spend time analyzing things like length, obstacles, distances, and the like. They then take into consideration how both bogey and par players will approach the course, thus coming up with their determinations for both course and slope ratings.

Funny thing, though… once I answer such questions, most players that are just in the game for the fun and recreational aspects stare at me blankly, probably more confused than ever! But if you are serious enough to want to participate in officially sanctioned tournaments, it is imperative that you know your handicap, especially if a financial reward is part of the mix. Unofficially, you can determine yours simply and easily via the use of a (usually free) online golf handicap calculator. After all, knowing is the best incentive for improving and for ensuring fair play for one and all.
