Hippo Golf Clubs
When it comes to golf, there was a time in my life when I knew absolutely nothing. So you can imagine my surprise when, on a not-so-long-ago milestone birthday, my wacky sister decided that the perfect gift for me would be a set of slightly used, oddly shaped Hippo golf clubs! Now, I must say that this particular sibling of mine just so happens to be an avid player, with a pretty good handicap (the first time I heard this, I wondered what her disability was, as I didn’t know of anything majorly wrong with her. I also wondered what, exactly, this unobvious “impairment” had to do with the way she played golf)! Ha ha. What did I know? I wasn’t into the sport, I’d never set foot on a course, and I didn’t have the slightest idea what a “tee” was, let alone a “handicap.” But unbeknownst to me at the time, all of that was about to change. And it all started with that fortuitous set of Hippo golf clubs!
The weekend after that eventful birthday, my sister decided to drag me out (against my will, I should say) for my first foray into the world of emerald fairways, lag putts, and elusive holes in one. With my (heavy and cumbersome) Hippo golf clubs in tow, I reluctantly made my way onto the course with her, thinking that, if nothing else, I could consider this a prime workout opportunity. I tried to make the most of that day, thinking “how hard could it be to hit a ball on the ground with a stick?” Well, let me tell you… on that first day, I succeeded in breaking a window, hitting a duck (without permanent harm, I’m relieved to report), and losing two entire boxes of balls to three different water hazards! Needless to say, I figured that was my sister’s first and last attempt at getting me to enter into the realm of her forte.
To my utter shock and amazement (and much to my dismay), the middle of the next week brought a call from my oh-so-zealous sister, informing me of our upcoming Saturday tee time. What?!?!? I begged and pleaded, but to no avail. She insisted I try my hand at the game yet again, and as I’ve always been one to shy away from confrontation, I decided to indulge her one more time. Along with the rest of the local golfing community, she had probably been well-entertained by my prior antics on the course and needed another “funny” fix. So the weekend came, and off we went, my Hippo golf clubs yet again weighing me down as I made my way to the first tee. But as I prepared for my first swing (if you could call it that), I felt an overwhelming determination to get that darned little ball to where it was actually supposed to go – not through a window, or into the water, and most definitely not through any members of the wildlife community! It was at that exact moment that I realized that the game was not just a test of physical skill, but also a mentally challenging exercise that taunted and dared me to compete with, well, myself! I took my time, found a point of balance, and hit that ball within a yard of that hole! OK… so it wasn’t the hole I had been aiming for, but it was good enough for me – what a rush!
And so began my love-hate relationship with the game of golf. It wasn’t long before I was hittin’ bogeys and birdies on the back nine with my sister and some of her cohorts (oh, and as you can see, I got the terminology down too!). Luckily for me, I seemed to have a knack for the game that I never, ever suspected, and it all came to light because of that awesome, amazing birthday gift from my beloved sibling. I owe a lot to that first set of Hippo golf clubs that my sister had so lovingly chosen for me. In fact, as I write this, I am eagerly awaiting my new, special-order set of Hippo golf clubs that I am hoping will improve my handicap (yes – I now know what this truly refers to) and put me on the road to becoming a small-time, tournament champ! Go figure…
